Advantages and disadvantages of DIAC
DIAC is a two-terminal semiconductor device that has been working in both forward and reverses polarities, it is known as the diode which had two-electrode and it is a member of the Thyristor family.
The full form of DIAC is a diode for alternating current, it is a transistor without any base terminal. We can switch ON or OFF the devices by varying breakdown voltage.
DIAC is the semiconductor device mainly used for switching applications, one of the main applications of DIAC is to trigger TRIAC.
Advantages of DIAC
- They have a very small size
- They are been available at a low cost
- The symmetrical switching function of DIAC will be reducing the harmonic in the circuit application.
- They don’t have any firing angle
- DIAC can be used in any direction if it is forward or reverses
- Reliable for low-power applications
- They offer smooth control as an electronic component
- The switching speed can be increased or decreased with the applied voltage
- DIAC component offers symmetrical switching characteristics
- It has a low on-state voltage drop
The explanation for advantages of DIAC
DIAC is available at LOW cost & small sizes
The DIAC is an electronic component which had multiple applications at circuits, the cost of this diode is similar to a conventional diode. The size of the DIAC is also the same as the diode.
Symmetrical switching characteristics
The DIAC had symmetrical switching characteristics, which means every DIAC diode’s operational characteristics are somewhat similar.
Symmetrical switching reduces harmonic
The symmetrical characteristics of the DIAC component at switching operation will also reduce the harmonics of the system, this happens when similar switching characteristics are shown by the DIAC.
DIAC have any firing angle
The DIAC is a two-terminal transistor device, which doesn’t have any controlling terminals similar to a gate or base terminal.
The ON/OFF switching operation of DIAC is happen by increasing and decreasing of breakdown voltage.
DIAC works in both directions
The DIAC is a bi-directional device works in both forward and reverse directions, this is possible due to the construction of DIAC, which is by placing two diodes in opposite directions.
It offers smooth control
The DIAC offers a smooth control or switching operation at circuits, which means the switching based on DIAC is smooth and simple.
The component like thyristor or MOSFET had a sharp or heavy switching, but the DIAC will offer only smooth and soft switching compared to these electronic devices.
Varying switching speed
The DIAC speed of switching is done with variations of applied voltage, we can easily decrease or increases the speed of DIAC by varying voltage towards the device.
Low on-state voltage drop
The on-state voltage drop is very less at the DIAC, this is when at the condition where the DIAC starts its operation, the voltage drop decreases dramatically.
Advantages and disadvantages of LDR
Disadvantages of DIAC
- It is a low-power device
- It cannot block high voltages
- Do not have a control terminal
- Low power handling capacity
- They only conduct when voltage increases above 30V.
Explanation of disadvantages of DIAC
DIAC is a low-power device
The DIAC is a semiconductor device used for low-power applications.
Low blocking voltage range
The breakdown voltage range of DIAC will be very limited, it is about 25V to 35V. This is why DIAC is not capable of blocking high voltage ranges.
