LM317is a voltage regulator IC, especially LM317 is a positive regulator component, we can make 1.25v to 30v adjustable power supply with a maximum current of 1.5amp, using this IC.

In this circuit we are placing an extra transistor for handling high current at the circuit, LM317 IC is used in the circuit other than this, and everything is the same.
And using a 5k potentiometer to adjust our output voltages.
Usually, LM317 IC withstands only 1.5amp of output current, whenever the output current value exceeds this limit LM317 IC heat increases drastically, then it leads to damage to the whole circuit. Protection from this issue here we are using an element called pass elements.
When we consider pass elements, they are components used at the circuits to increase output current limit, transistors are the component acts as the pass element, generally, they are applied in 2 ways in the circuit to get high current output, first one is using the positive side as same as this project and then the second type is using negative side, that is placing a transistor at output side and for this purpose, we need to use tip3055 or 2N3055 transistors.
